Heath and safety plans
This module will be developed at a later date.
The preparation and use of health and safety plans are taught in construction-sector courses at UK universities, as part of general training in construction-sector occupational health and safety, under pressure from the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and the professions. This pressure is a direct result of the high number of injuries and fatalities in the construction sector. For the HSE’s own take on what needs to be taught, refer to the HSE E-Learning website.
The HSE website provides free introductory leaflets on construction. In particular, refer to those leaflets covering the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994, including:
- Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994: The role of the client (2003 reprint) (Construction Information Sheet No. 39).
- Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994: The role of the planning supervisor (Construction Information Sheet No. 40).
- Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994: The role of the designer (2002 reprint) (Construction Information Sheet No. 41).
- Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994: The pre-tender stage health and safety plan (2001 reprint) (Construction Information Sheet No. 42).
- Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994: The Health and Safety Plan during the construction phase (Construction Information Sheet No. 43).
- Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994: The Health and Safety File (Construction Information Sheet No. 44).
Documents produced by the Association for Project Safety (APS) may assist, particularly Model Health & Safety Plan 2004, and APS Reading and reference list for supervision - 2006. APS has also produced training material for students and professionals.
The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 1994 are set to be replaced in 2007. Refer to:
- Health and Safety Commission (2006), Draft. Approved Code of Practice: Managing health and safety in construction, HSC.
- Health and Safety Commisssion (2006) Draft Statutory Instruments: The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2007, HSC.
